Welcome to *Tending Tuesday*, our opportunity to hear a fellow writer’s voice, one who is seeking to encourage others in their walk with Jesus while tending her own life by the Word of God.
Meet Sarah Butterfield…
Sarah K. Butterfield lives in San Diego with her husband and two boys. As a missionary kid turned ministry leader, she is passionate about empowering moms to grow in their faith. She loves her first sip of coffee, getting lost in a book, and overindulging in ice cream.
What Sarah has to say about tending her way…
God’s presence is with me always. Although I grew up in the church and became well versed in Sunday school answers, somehow this particular bit of head knowledge didn’t translate to my heart until a few years ago.
I used to believe that spending time with the Lord involved going to church, praying before bed, and reading my Bible every morning. Bonus if I went to a Bible study during the week. Check, check, check.
Although these spiritual practices are commendable, I was treating them as a dutiful daughter would. Instead of treating these practices as life-giving, they were more like an obligation. As a result, my relationship with God was a bit superficial.
Becoming a mom made me realize my deep need for God. Coupled with the understanding that God is always with me, I began to take our relationship more seriously.
I discovered “Lectio Divina,” a monastic practice of scripture reading, meditation, and prayer designed to promote communion with God.
I start by gently reading a short passage of Scripture. I read it enough times to let it sink in. I make a note of a word or short phrase that speaks to me. Then I reflect upon how the passage relates to me. I invite God to speak to me first. I allow time for silence, and to be open to what God has to say to me. Then I take that special word or phrase with me and return to it throughout the day.
This practice has helped me to be more intentional with how I spend time with the Lord, and it reminds me to draw near to God throughout the day. No longer is my quiet time an item to check off my spiritual to-do list, it’s an opportunity to grow in relationship.
