Finding a Morning Rhythm

The house, still under the blanket of morning, fills with the fragrance of coffee and calls me towards my Tending Place (the corner of my home office where the Lord tends my soul by His Word each morning) . The rhythm of my morning sets the pattern for my day and for many years I have followed the same pattern.

Pouring the hot coffee into my favorite mug, I am already turning my heart towards the Lord. Good morning, Lord, thank you for fresh starts and a new morning.

I light the pumpkin candle near me, nestle into my favorite chair, and gather my fuzzy blanket around myself. These small joys of the morning help settle my heart and awaken my mind towards the Father.

O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch (Psalm 5:3). I wonder if the Psalmist had a similar routine of daily time with the Lord as the sunlight peeked over the horizon.

I begin my time at the feet of Jesus by quieting my mind. I open the gratitude journal and remember with gratitude the gifts of the previous day, as they roll in my thoughts.

Opening my hands, I ask Him to speak through His Word this morning. Using my TEND method, I slow down and lean into the verses on the pages. In the stillness of the morning and the quietness of my soul, the Lord speaks through His Word. He reminds me of who He is and highlights the truth that convicts and encourages and guides me.

Thank you for your Word, Lord, enable me to respond by Your Spirit.

I journal the response He brings to mind and I know there is accountability in writing it down. The reminder of His new mercies in the morning (Lamentations 3:23) comes to mind and I praise Him for it.

Finding a life-giving, morning rhythm that daily draws me back to His feet has been where I have come to know Him better and found real peace.

Do you have a life-giving morning rhythm that lures you each day to return to His lap and lean into His whisper? If not, or if your time with the Lord could use a bit of refreshment, drop your email below for my free downloadable booklet, Tools for Tending your Soul.

  1. Mariel, the description of your morning is similar to those I spent while in our mountain home of 30 years. Now, in our tiny house – I find my quiet space on a comfy stool at the kitchen counter. The location is not important but the lessons are priceless. xo

  2. Mariel, we thought of the same verse. I am so grateful He meets each of us in the morning as we come to Him. Mornings are my favorite part of the day!
