As our doors begin to reopen and our schedules get busy again, it seems the noise within us is gaining volume. Summer is typically a time to refresh and rest. It’s a time to regroup and reorient our hearts. But after eighteen months of pandemic life, we have become like children in a schoolyard playing Red Light, Green Light and charging the leader at the slightest glimpse of the green paddle.
With our running comes noise and with our noise comes our overwhelmed, disquieted souls.
How do we get back to the rest, the quiet our souls long for?
The psalmist David gave us the inspired words that remind us this is all a choice. “But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me” (Psalm 131:2).
David says he calmed and quieted his soul. It is a choice we have to either allow ourselves to be swept into the undercurrent of noise, busyness and overwhelm; or to make the deliberate choice to go to the One whose very character is peace.
Each morning I have to make the choice again, Will I sit before Him and let His Word tend my soul first or will I open my phone first?
Each morning I have to make the choice to quiet my soul again. Word or world first? #fiveminutefridayTweet
Finding the quiet our souls crave is a daily, intentional and repeated choice. We will not make the choice to sit before the Lord and unpack a verse, allowing it to penetrate our hearts on Monday and then expect that to carry us through till Sunday.
To be calmed and quieted like a weaned child, we need daily time in the Word.
We need intentional time in the Word.
We need repeated time in the Word.
Out of my need for this quieting, I sought applicable methods to unpack the Word and learn to tend it into my soul, like a gardener tends a garden. The simple TEND method helps me be able to do this on a daily basis. It’s a life line to quieting my very loud and easily distracted soul.
I would love to send you the simple PDF journal I developed to walk you through this simple method. Just drop your email below and I will slip it into your inbox, along with bi-monthly tools to help you keep tending your soul.
