Our minds and our breathing are interestingly intertwined.
When we are fearful, we take shallow breathes, even leading to panic attacks or hyperventilating at times. When we are sad and weeping, we often take breaths that reflect that. Even in our tiredness, our breathing is affected as we yawn.
If we, humans created in the image of God, have such intentional purposes for our breathing, then what might that say about our Creator?
Scripture tells us of two things God breathed.
“The LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.” (Genesis 2:7)
“All Scripture if breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)
God’s breath seems to be intertwined with His mind, as well. He breathed out life into man to make him a physical living being. He also breathed out the Word of life to give us spiritual eternal life when we surrender to Him.
At our physical birth, we inhaled for the first time and our lungs filled with oxygen so we might live apart from the nourishment of our mother’s body. When we place our faith in the life and sacrificial death of Jesus our soul is filled by the Spirit of God, giving us eternal life rather than the eternal death we deserve for our sin.
If you are currently drawing physical breath, I challenge you TODAY to breath in the faith He offers in the One True God, Jesus and inhale eternal life.
“The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient towards you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. ” (2 Peter 3:9)
If you have not trusted Jesus as your Savior, I invite you to recognize that you are a sinner, having fallen short of the perfect standard of God without any hope of achieving it. (see Romans 3:23)
Realize God sent the ONLY Way, Truth and Life that can save you in His Son Jesus. (see John 14:6)
So if you confess with your mouth and believe with your heart that God raised Him from the dead for you, then you will be saved. (see Romans 10:8-13)

Love this post and so needed. Im finding it hard to breathe spirituality right now.
Sara, Thank you for your honesty. It can be so hard to breathe spiritually in the midst of so much darkness. Thankfully He meets us where we are. I encourage you to pause, close your eyes and breathe an honest prayer to Him. Then remind yourself of what is true. For me it helps to remind my heart of who He is because that is ALWAYS true. He is Able, Beautiful, Caring, Dad, Excellent in His ways, Faithful, Good…etc.
May He meet you where you are today. God bless!
Speaking Truth, sistah.
Your post reminds me of something I’ve been learning in a yoga for fitness class I am taking right now (I feel like I have to say “for fitness” to clarify for those who are concerned about it being a pseudo-religious exercise). The instructor repeatedly reminds us to be doing the right breathing at the right time. Just as you wrote, sometimes we need a yawn (*yawning as I write that*), and sometimes we need a few quick breaths. Similarly, God gives us the breath we need as it is needed. He gives us a verse of Scripture to encourage us or to encourage a friend. Thank you for giving me a little bit of breath this morning.

Love the connections you make here Mariel and your Salvation message! I’m sure your words will reach the ones who need them!
Thank you, Cindy! Praying so!!
Breathe in the fresh air known of old,
elixer to both age and youth,
breathe the Word that makes heart bold,
the never-changing truth.
Breathe the love that animates
(or should) the lives we live;
for as the Lord with skill creates,
He brings the best to give.
Breathe the copper scent of Blood
shed for your vile sins,
for after Noah faced the Flood
a new bright day begins
in which we are not cast aside,
but redeemed from all our foolish pride.
Amen! thank you for sharing your words, Andrew, they always bless me.
Amen! I’m reminded of the song by Point of Grace (or maybe it’s Avalon) “You Are My Oxygen.” Such truth.
Oh, yes, Anita!! I am going to go listen to that song again!
