Tending Tuesday: Tending in disappointment

Welcome to *Tending Tuesday*, our opportunity to hear a fellow writer’s voice, one who is seeking to encourage others in their walk with Jesus while tending her own life by the Word of God.

Meet Melissa Dyer…

Melissa knows first-hand how easy it is to fall into a pit of discouragement. Helping women understand how to cultivate courage in their everyday ordinary life and climb out of the pit, is her passion. Melissa resides in sunny South Florida with her husband, two teenage children, and two fur babies.

What Melissa has to say about tending her way according to the Word…

Once God’s Word is planted in your heart, it’s ok to let Him speak in a variety of ways. For years I’ve made it a daily discipline to plant God’s Word in my heart. I’ve also invested tens of thousands of hours diving deep into Bible study. Lately, my time with God looks a bit different. Yes, I open myself up to the daily verse and wash myself of other early morning distractions, but I also spend time walking with the Word in my everyday ordinary life, than chasing Him down between the pages of my Bible. This is the reaping of the Word planted in you.

Recently, I experienced a crushing disappointment. The loss was real. But still I awoke, read the verse of the day, and sat.

But I needed more.

I had things to say to Him that wouldn’t allow me to sit quietly, cozied up on the couch. They were dynamic and required motion. I have a place for these kinds of words with Him, we do this at the beach. Ear buds in, worship music playing, and off I went. I needed to be heard. Of course, everything He sent my way was purposed to encourage. But like a lover scorned, I played hard-to-get and only offered back a cold-shouldered heart.

He can take it.

Eventually, I had to surrender to His will. And just about the time I acquiesced, I opened an email I look forward to reading a few times a week from The Passion Translation Bible. His message was clear. There was no more for me to do than receive it and continue with courage.

This is a life of tending. When we know His revealed will so intimately through Scripture we can tend even more, His personal will for us. I still keep to the Word, it just comes through many other mediums.
