tending tuesday: tending in the tiny *GIVEAWAY*

Welcome to *Tending Tuesday*, our opportunity to hear a fellow writer’s voice, one who is seeking to encourage others in their walk with Jesus while tending her own life by the Word of God.

Meet Susan Shipe…

Susan Chamberlain Shipe, a writer since the age of eight when she and her neighborhood friend wrote, edited, published, and distributed The Manor News. Things have changed since publishing with the five and dime stamp lettering set! Today, Susan enjoys blogging, writing short devotions and short stories from the tiny house in Upstate South Carolina, which she shares with her husband of thirty plus years, Lowell.

Susan has released several books and devotionals (*click here and scroll down to see the variety you get to choose from if you win!*) and she is generously offering one for one of YOU who leave a comment about how you tend your way!

What Susan has to say about tending her way by the Word…

One thousand square feet ago the mornings found me climbing the stairs to our den with a carafe of coffee in my grip!

I would settle into my big comfy armchair and reach for my journal, my Bible, and my old-faithful copy of My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. I would pour a big cuppa coffee and enter the Holy of Holies!

There I would sit for at least one hour or, on some mornings, two! O! The sweet fellowship of those times I will always cherish. Many a spiritual battle was fought on that textured upholstery and even more lessons were learned.

Fast forward to December 2019 and I was searching for a quiet, alone place in our 399 square foot Tiny House. My husband is retired and enjoys sleeping in – that was my good fortune – I learned that I could have just as sweet a time with the Lord on the leather stool at our kitchen counter!

God didn’t mind one bit.

You see, spending time with God has nothing to do with the where or the how – it has everything to do with the will and the when! You will never hear me preaching that you have to spend X amount of hours in study and prayer to have an intimate relationship with your Savior.

Five minutes on the run are better than a legalistic 90 minutes of empty, ritualistic reading.

Did I really just say that? I have a short attention span as I approach my 70th birthday party. I read on the run and I pray, never saying amen.

What exactly does that mean? I pray all day long. I want to be that person who sits with pen, paper, 12 reference books, four translations of the Bible and taking copious notes BUT, ALAS, I am not. I love to open The Word and let the words find me.

He never fails me.

I am a faith writer and (almost) every day of the week I am quoting scriptures and writing encouragement. I am in the center of God’s will for my (now) life.

Seasons change. Years bring change. But I have learned that my Father is just as faithful now as He was one thousand square feet ago. He loves me and He longs for me, whether it is 60 minutes or five on the fly. He cherishes our “want-to.”

Please don’t feel guilty or under condemnation if your quiet time doesn’t look like Holy Helen’s – God made you just the way you are and not the way you think you’re supposed to be!

      1. Joy comes in the morning! I wake up, workout out, enjoy a cup of coffee and it’s just me and Him in the peace of the morning for as long as my babies will allow for! Happy Birthday!!!!

  1. Loved this. Thanks for sharing Susan! “Spending time with God has nothing to do with the where or the how – it has everything to do with the will and the when!”. God is teaching me this and helping me to find my rhythm this year as ideally the long, quiet hours and space that I want for my devotion are far and few with kids now home more often than not. But I’ve learnt to snatch 5 minutes here and there and God still refreshes my soul! x

  2. Mariel, thank you for bringing Susan’s voice to this place! She’s a treasure, and I am also one whose tending practices have morphed and changed over the years… and even from day to day, so it’s wonderful to hear a word of confirmation that God does not have a stop watch in his hand.

    1. Michele, you are so welcome. Having Susan’s perspective is such a gift to me and I am grateful to see how it is a blessing to my readers, too. she is a treasure and an encouragement for sure!!

  3. Thank you, everyone, for commenting and sharing in our excitement this Tending Tuesday! The winner of the giveaway is Cara! She has been notified and has chosen Susan’s devotional 31 Days of Christmas. <3
