Three Ways to Simplify the Walk

We easily complicate things, don’t we? Maybe it’s just me, but I can add rules and boundaries and expectations so fast that I can hardly catch my breath!

I have to be intentional to keep things simple, uncluttered in my mind and heart. This is especially true in my relationship with Jesus.

That is why I prefer to tend my life, like a garden, by the Word of God in a grace-filled way. I need simple practices to apply to my day that are not more “to do” things, because who needs that?

So how can we begin to pluck weeds, apply Living water, and cultivate the routines of our day in a simple way that draws us nearer to the heart of the Father?

For me, it is living out the simple example of ole Enoch from Genesis chapter five.

“Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.”

He was a father, busy with the responsibilities of children when he began to walk with God. I can relate. My firstborn was four months old when the Lord captured my heart for the first time. Then Scripture tells us Enoch walked with God.

He just walked with Him. It was simple, daily, routine. No evidence of a burden or a to do list to check off. Enoch did life walking with his God.

How can busy women follow this simple example?

  • Pray while folding laundry. I pray for the person who’s laundry I am folding and for the part that article of clothing will go on. Lord, let my son walk where you lead, as I fold socks. Lord, cultivate a pure heart in my husband, as I fold a shirt.
  • Listen to a Bible app as I walk the dog in the morning. Having the Word read over me as I walk gives my heart a life giving focus while my body gets the blood flowing for the day.
  • Play praise music while running errands. Rather than letting my mind go idle with my car at stoplights, I blast the praise louder than my worries and let Truth be what fills me rather than concerns.

How about you? How do you walk with God through the routine of your day? God desires relationship and intimacy, will we meet Him there?

  1. Lately, I’ve been focusing more on memorizing Scripture, Mariel. So, I’ve made up some pretty Scripture cards, laminated them, put them on a ring and now review them when I’m on my exercise bike or treadmill, when I’m waiting in line or at the doctor’s office, etc. It’s helping me to walk more with God and hear His voice above the chatter of the world. Thanks for your great reminders and challenge! Pinning!

  2. I have started walking and hiking again. Being out in nature is so refreshing and it revives me. I feel Him in the beauty of His creation. I never get tired of being in the woods or walking out on my country roads. This post was a breath of fresh air!

  3. Thinking about his word during the day. Listening to the bible. Praying for others as I go about the day. I hadn’t really thought of this as walking with God, so thanks for expanding my brain. Yes, we like to complicate things when really it is simpler than we think.
